Catherine of Alexandria was never canonized. She died the death of a martyr and was declared a saint by the early Christian community in Alexandria, Egypt. Today, only the pope can declare saints. In 1969 she was removed from the Calendar of Saints because there was little evidence that she ever existed. Everything we knew about her seemed to be based on legend. However, in 2002 Pope John Paul II again added her to the Calendar when a diary of Catherine was found in Ethiopia and verified as being authentic.

Researchers have little doubt that Catherine of Alexandria was a real person. However, much of the information surrounding her life and martyrdom are probably fabrications or, at the very least, exaggerations . It is believed that she was beheaded after other means of execution failed. Her name was removed from the Calendar of Saints in 1969 but returned to its former status when a diary purported to be written by Catherine, was found in the 1980s.
Many of the saints dropped from the calendar probably did exist but their lives are based on many myths and legends and little factual information has survived. They have not been 'de-sainted' and are still considered to be saints but have been removed from the calendar. Here are a few examples:Saint Valentine of RomeSaint UrsulaSaint ChristopherSaint Barbara of Nicomedia (cult supressed in 1969)Saint Dorothy (cult supressed in 1969)Saint Philomena was never recogized formally as a saint and her cult was only permitted in Mungano, Italy, where her relics are held.Saint Olivia never existed except in a fictional story circulating in the Church that was mistaken for a biography.Saint Catherine of Alexandria was also removed from the calendar at this time but was returned by Pope John Paul II in 2002 when her diary was found in Ethiopia verifying her life. There were a number of other lesser known saints also dropped from the calendar in the 1960s.
