After being held prisoner for a number of years and made a slave in Tunis he was finally set free. He returned to France where he served as a parish priest near Paris where he started organizations to help the poor, nursed the sick, found jobs for the unemployed, etc. He was made chaplain at the court of Henry IV of France. With Louise de Marillac, he founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity and instituted the Congregation of Priests of the Mission (Lazarists). Vincent worked always for the poor, the enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored, the pariahs.

He died on September 27,1660, at Paris, France, of natural causes and his body was found incorrupt when exhumed in 1712.
