Mary , Joseph and the baby Jesus fled in the night to Egypt.
Herod the Great wanted to kill Jesus. When Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt, Herod had no authority there. Even if he could have sent men into Egypt to kill Jesus, they probably could not have found the family.
A:In Matthew's Gospel, Mary and Joseph faced danger from King Herod, who sought to have Jesus killed. They took the baby Jesus from their home in Bethlehem to Egypt. After Herod died, they began the return journey to Bethlehem, but were warned in a dream that Archelaus, Herod's son and successor as king of Judea, was still a danger to Jesus. They therefore turned aside and travelled to start a new home in the city of Nazareth in Galilee, out of reach of Archelaus. In Luke's Gospel, Mary and Joseph faced the inconvenience of travelling from their home in Nazareth for a census in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. As they faced no danger from Herod, they journeyed from Bethlehem to Jerusalem a few days after the birth of Jesus, to present him at the Temple. They then returned peacefully to their home in Nazareth.
Possibly in his 40's-50's, the Bible does not say, but Jewish extra-biblical sources say he was an older man (not aged) and Jesus had brothers and sisters, so he can't have been too old to father children.
He traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem with Mary, where Jesus was born. From Bethlehem he took his family to Egypt. From Egypt they returned to Nazareth.
For a while Jesus and his parents had to live in Egypt to escape the Roman ruler who ordered that Jewish boy babies age two and over be killed. When the threat ended they went back to their home town of Nazareth.

Jesus was originally born in Bethlehem, and then moved to Egypt to escape Herod. However Jesus spent the majority of his life in Nazareth thus he is referred to as: Jesus of Nazareth.
They fled to Egypt to escape the murder of the boy children of Bethlehem by Herod. After King Herod died, they went to Nazareth to live because they came from Nazareth in the first place. Luke 2, Matthew 2.
First Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to be taxed, during which visit Jesus was born; then the family fled to Egypt to escape the infanticide of Herod; then they came back to Nazareth, Joseph's home. When Jesus was older they also went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, about six miles from Jerusalem, in Israel. After his birth, he lived there for up to a year. He lived for a short time (a few months to a couple years) somewhere in Egypt after that, then went to Nazareth in Galilee (northern Israel) where he spent most of his childhood. He lived there until he began his ministry, around the age of 30.
