The Old Testament was the scripture used by the New Testament Christians. They read it quoted from it and preached Jesus out of it. Paul, being a pharisee and thus knew it as well as any proved who Jesus was from it:

1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. Peter used the Old Testament book of Joel in his Pentecost sermon and Stephen when stoned rehearsed much of the Old Testament history. These accounts give a 'snapshot' of what much of the New Testament preaching and teaching must have been like.

Another example is how Philip used Isaiah, being read by the Ethiopian official, to speak about Jesus. Jesus Himself used it often of course in His teaching and interpreted it rightly, in contrast to the teachers of His day.

During New Testament times, copies of the Old Testament were handwritten on scrolls made of parchment or papyrus. These copies were carefully transcribed by Jewish scribes to preserve the sacred text and were highly valued in Jewish communities. The process of copying and preserving the Old Testament texts was rigorous and meticulous to ensure accuracy.

During Jesus' presence on earth and prior to the writing of the New Testament, Old Testament scrolls were copied and recopied. It was common to read from them in the synagogues, and it was the parent's duty to teach them to their children. The children also memorized the scrolls as part of their education. When the Scrolls were read in the synagogue the ministers would stand up to read and would sit down to speak or teach.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book [scroll] of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to… Luke 4:16-18
