Aristotle was the father of political science, but the father of modern political science is considered to be Niccoló Machiavelli.
Rationalism emphasized reason and logic as the primary sources of knowledge and truth, while puritanism was a religious movement that advocated for a strict and disciplined life based on the principles of Calvinism. William Carey is often remembered as the father of modern missions. He was a British Christian missionary and known for his work in India, translating the Bible into multiple languages and promoting education and social reform. Swedenborg was certainly influential on the modern spiritualist movement, but he was one of many people expounding their teachings/philosophies on the super-natural. He might be considered one of the fathers, but is certainly not THE father. It should be noted that the writings of Swedenborg did indeed usher in a new age, but the new age that we have today is very different than the new age which was promoted and initiated by the writings of Swedenborg. There are many aspects of which modern spiritualists have taken from Swedenborg, especially from his work on Heaven and Hell, but they have left behind may others, such as the Divinity of Jesus Christ and the eternity of the hell, and introduced others which are contrary to what Swedenborg wrote, such as reincarnation. As to being a father of any movement or any idea, Swedenborg would be the first to say that there is one Father, the Father of eternity, the Prince of peace.
The Puritans believed God was actively involved in his creations lives and in complete control and the Rationalist believed God created earth and then retreated and let his creation control themselves as if they were their own devices.

US progress is largely based on modern technology. And modern technology is based on rationalism: if it works, then everything is OK. If I think "logically" (rationally), then I will make it work. However irrationalism has much to give in philosophy and life: love, forginevess, etc... life and existence itself is irrational! And let's not forget that Godel proved the limits of rationalism with his Incompleteness Theorem...
One really good book on rationalism that will explain it to the reader is Understanding Rationalism (Understanding Movements in Modern Thought) by Charlie Huenenmann. Another book is the History of Rationalism by J.F Hurst. Both would be great reads on the subject of rationalism.
In modern Western view, rationalism is 'any view appealing to reason as a source of wisdom'. It is the belief that 'the criterion of truth' is not sensory but 'logical'. In politics, 'rationalism' is a development since Enlightenment that emphasizes a 'politics of reason' (setting aside emotion), this has especially been promoted by 'liberalism'.
