The Book of Daniel says that Daniel was captured in the 3rd year of the reign of Jehoiakim. On this evidence, Daniel must have been in captivity 70 years by the time the Persians defeated the Babylonians. Daniel would probably have been in his late seventies or early eighties by the time the Book says that he was thrown in the lion's den.

However, the Book of Daniel says that the Persian king, who defeated the Babylonians and later attempted to sacrifice Daniel to the lions, was Darius. But historians say that Cyrus was the Persian king who defeated the Babylonians, and that Darius was a successor. If the author really intended to place this event during the actual reign of Darius, then Daniel would have been at least ninety and possibly more than 100 years old at the time.

The Bible doesn't say exactly, but if Daniel was in his teens when he was brought to Babylon in 617 BCE, he would be nearly 100 years old by the time he received the vision in Daniel 12:13 where the angel seems to indicate that Daniel is nearing his death.....most probably of old age.

A:The story in Daniel chapter 6 says that Daniel was thrust into the role of second-in command of the entire Persian empire, and that jealous men conspired to have Daniel thrown into the den of lions, taking advantage of the well-known Persian code of morality in which a promise can not be broken. They had King Darius issue an edict that prevented anyone from any form of prayer, an edict which Daniel immediately broke. It follows with a pious passage that can only be Propaganda. Not only was Daniel a role model for the readers, by praying to his God in spite of the risk, his God was able to save him from the lions, just as God had previously saved the young men from the furnace in a quite similar context. In the previous episode, the Chaldeans accused Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego of not worshipping the golden idol, and therefore King Nebuchadnezzar only had them thrown into the furnace, but not Daniel, who would have been equally At Fault.

The author of the Book of Daniel had saved Daniel for the passage about the lion's den, because to have Daniel too frequently subjected to attempts on his life, and miraculously saved, would have reduced the dramatic impact. Similarly, the three friends had fulfilled their role by escaping from the furnace and to later place them in the lion's den with Daniel would reduce the literary impact of Daniel's plight (Biblical scholars say that Danielwas a Jewish novel, written approximately 167 BCE).

A:Daniel chapter 6 says that Daniel was thrust into the role of second-in command of the entire Persian empire, and that jealous men conspired to have Daniel thrown into the den of lions, taking advantage of the well-known Persian code of morality in which a promise can not be broken. They had King Darius issue an edict that prevented anyone from any form of prayer, an edict which Daniel immediately broke. Daniel told the king that an angel was sent to close the mouths of the lions, and he survived the entire night in the den.

Biblical scholars say that Daniel was an early Jewish novel, written approximately 167 BCE. It eventually became accepted as a genuine history of the Babylonian Exile, no doubt because of its strong theological content. Although the book gives Daniel an honoured place in Persian history, there is no mention of him in the history of Persia, and much of the book's interpretation of historical events is confused and contradicts what we know about the time. For the purposes of the novel, Daniel was indeed put in the lions' den, but this was not a historical event so nothing actually happened to Daniel.

Daniel did not die in the lions' den. God protected him from harm, and he emerged unscathed after spending the night among the lions.
