When the two women were fighting over the child, Solomon suggested that the child be cut in half, and each woman would be given half. The actual mother was horrified and fought against this decision, saying that the other woman could keep the child, to avoid its death. While the fake mother was encouraging Solomons decision, and saying that they could keep half a baby each. Solomon gave the child to the real mother, the woman that would rather give him up than see him dead.
Solomon knew that the woman was the real mother of the child because when he suggested cutting the child in half to settle the dispute, the real mother showed selfless love by offering to give up her claim to save the child's life, while the other woman agreed to the division. The baby in question was not cut in half, but was a question posed to two women claiming to be the mothers of a child. When King Solomon challenged his guard to divide the child equally to both mothers "cut the child in half" the real mother screamed that she was not the mother and begged to let the other woman (not the real mother) have the child. This let the King know who the real mother was. Only the real mother loved the baby enough to be willing to give up her right to the child to save the child's life. King Solomon awarded the child to the real mother. 1 Kings 3:16-28.

It really isn't necessary. It's usually when a man marries a woman with a child that he may want to give the child HIS last name. If there is no mother in the picture then by all means seek legal counsel and adopt the child, but I think it's a waste of money. The child will know you as their mother no matter what.
