The New Testament sets forth qualifications for two types of office bearers in the church, elders and deacons. The qualifications for deacons are most fully set forth in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. The New Testament nowhere states that deacons should be apt to teach. Paul states that elders should be "able to teach" (1 Tim. 3:2) and to exhort and rebuke according to sound doctrine (Titus 1:9), but the same requirements are not laid upon deacons--although Paul's insistence that deacons "hol[d] the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience" (1 Tim. 3:9 NKJV) implies that deacons should have some knowledge of the truth of the gospel (cf. Col. 1:25-27).
