Christ was crucified on a cross, but there are at least 3 types:

- "T-shaped" (or "low tau") .

- "+- shaped" (or "high-tau"). [This is the traditional shaped cross. ]

- a vertical upright, such as a tree or post or stake.

Christ was made a curse for us and prophesied that such a person would be hung on a tree.

Galatians 3

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, "Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

Strong's G4716 says the greek word for "cross" is "stauros" and means an upright stake, or post, permanently set in the ground.

Although other verses in "Acts" refer to Christ on a "tree", this is because the audience were jews and being referred back to what Moses said in Deuteronomy.

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

As Jesus was crucified on a "stauros" , possibly a tree-trunk, it meant He was only carrying the crosspiece on His shouldersy, not an entire tree.

Still, it is really irrelevant whether the type of cross Christ died on was shaped like a "T", an "X", a "+", an "I" , a tree, a post, or stake: the end result was the same. Christ died for our sins, for the sins of everyone in the the entire world, He took the penalty of death that we deserve upon Himself. Christ saved people from death BUT although this free gift of salvation is available for all, it actually has to be asked for. Accept Christ and live.

Jesus likely carried only the crossbeam of the cross, also known as the patibulum. The upright part of the cross, called the stipes, was likely already in place at the crucifixion site. Carrying only the crossbeam would have been more manageable for Jesus considering the weight and size of a full cross.
