That depends on the context. "Genki", "iji", or "chikara" are the terms generally used to describe figurative spirit, or zeal. "Chikara" actually translates more accurately to "strength".

In terms of a spirit as in, beings of the afterlife... "Kamui", "mikage", "oni", or "youkai" all work, although "youkai" generally refers more to a demon or a spectre.

The Japanesse are a very religious people as a whole. They believe that the human spirit exists and that it needs to be taken care of before and after death. During ceremonies the families of the deceased will serve a bowl of rice to the the spirit of their dead relative as an offereing.
