St. Paul was Saul of Tarsus, he was a Pharisee and he studied under the most famous Jewish teacher of all time, Gamaliel. Gamaliel was a leader of the Sanhedrin at Jamnia. Saul of Tarsus was very fervent for his religion and did everything he could to wipe out the new Christian sect as he believed it was heresy.
