The Bible teaches that God owns everything, and man owes Him the first 10% of any increase.
There were other tithes as well:-
(1) That one tenth of the whole produce of the soil was to be assigned for the maintenance of the Levites (ie the priests).
(2) That a second tithe was to be used for the use of the temple and festival purposes.
(3) That in every third year, another tithe was to be used for the welfare of the poor, homeless, widows, etc
(These tithes took the place of our modern taxes, and welfare payments.)
The Old Testament law of tithes is not binding on Christians , but the principle remained:-
1Co 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
1Co 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
Christians ought to willingly go beyond the old testament tithing laws if they can in deep gratitude due to Christ's sacrifice and what He has done and is doing both now and in the future for all eternity for us in consecrating both themselves and their substance to God.
But Christians are not to give if it causes hardship:-
1Ti 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
In the Bible, tithes refer to giving a portion (typically 10%) of one's income or possessions to support the church or religious community. This practice is often seen as a way to honor God and support the work of the ministry.
The Levites were supported in terms of sustenance (i.e. food) by the other Israelite tribes as they had no land to farm. They ate the sacrificial offerings to God that weren't intended to be burned as in a second way, God supported the Levites as his offerings were gifts to support them. The Levites were priests, and carried out the ceremonies at the temples, and kept themselves sacred, and were thus able to eat the food worthy of God.
The phrase "to obey is better than sacrifice" is from the Bible, specifically in 1 Samuel 15:22. This verse conveys the idea that obedience to God's commandments is more important than offering sacrifices or making ritual offerings.

Malachi Chapter 3, v 10
The Bible teaches that withholding tithes and offerings can be viewed as an act of disobedience against God. In Malachi 3:8-10, it is stated that failing to bring the full tithe into the storehouse is akin to robbing God. This highlights the importance of faithfulness in giving as a response to God's provision and blessings. Ultimately, it emphasizes the relationship between trust in God and financial stewardship.

In a church context, money is often referred to as "tithes" or "offerings." Tithes typically refer to a specific percentage of a person's income given to the church, while offerings can be any additional contributions made voluntarily. These funds are used to support the church's operations, community outreach, and various ministries.

The Bible never says anything about who receives tithes. You tithe by giving away money (or food, clothes, shoes, etc) for the purpose of showing God that you will not withold anything from Him. The recipients can be your church, homeless people, someone in need, or whoever else God asks you to give to.AnswerOnly to the Levites Priests, Nehemiah 10:36 Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:10:37 And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.10:38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house. There are no more Levites priest now.
