1. To reestablish a close relationship between.
2. To settle or resolve.
3. To bring (oneself) to accept: He finally reconciled himself to the change in management.
4. To make compatible or consistent: reconcile my way of thinking with yours. See Synonyms at adapt

Another answer:

The dictionary definition of the English word "reconcile" doesn't do justice to the original Greek word katallasso, which means:

1. to change, exchange (as coins for others of equivalent value)
2. to reestablish a relationship between those at variance
3. to return to favor with
4. to receive one into favor

In order to "reestablish a close relationship between those at variance" (God and man - see Romans 5:10), Jesus "exchanged" Himself for mankind, taking the punishment for sin though He was sinless. This made it possible for man to be reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:20) through faith in Christ (Romans 5:1).

Matthew 20:28 - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. [NKJV]

What did it mean that Jesus was made to be sin for us?

Jesus the Christ was the Son of God and therefore sinless. He did not sin.... ever. But in order to died for the sins of mankind while He was on the cross of Calvary all the sins of mankind was turned over to Him. He had to take our sins into His body and die. They were not His sins they were our sins but he took them upon Himself and died in our place. This is why when we accept Jesus as our Savior our sins are gone because He took them at Calvary. We as Christians will never be judged for our sin as Jesus took care of them when he was sacrificed for them. The agony of Crucifixion was a terrible death, but can you imagine the extra agony that Jesus had, being a sinless person taking all the sin of mankind upon Himself. Only Jesus could have done this.

What The Bible says about reconcilation?

To reconcile means to bring together that which has been separated. With Adam's fall, man was separated from God, but Christ's accomplishments have brought us back together with Him. Romans 5:10 "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." II Corinthians 5:18-20 "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God." Ephesians 2:16 "And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:" Colossians 1:20 "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." Colossians 1:21 "And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled"

How is reconciliation an encounter with Christ?

In the Bible reconciliation means a change of relationship between God and man based on the redemptive work of Christ. 2Corinthians 5:18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 2Corinthinans 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Notice these verses show that it is God who does the reconciling. You could say reconciliation is an encounter with Christ, but I think it is better to say an encounter with Christ comes first. If you accept the salvation God offers through Christ then you are reconciled to God.
