The royal family of England murdered and tortured a lot of Catholics in Ireland. Queen Mary, 'bloody Mary' murdered a lot of Protestants. So there was a lot of bloodshed in the old days when England used them against each other, and the Catholics and Protestants held a grudge against each other long after the old generations passed away.
Many did not like the Irish Catholics that came over in great numbers from the Great Potato Famine. People suspected that they would do the bidding of the pope and not listen to American laws and leaders. http://www.academicamerican.com/jeffersonjackson/topics/religion_reform.htm
Protestants are followers of the Christian faith who protested against certain teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Puritans were a specific group within Protestantism who sought to purify the Church of England from perceived Roman Catholic influences. While all Puritans were Protestants, not all Protestants were Puritans.
The first settlers at Roanoke and elsewhere would have been Anglican protestants as was during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I who had strong prohibitions against other denomiations, particularly catholics.
The Puritans were granted the right of public worship under the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649, which permitted freedom of worship for all Trinitarian Christians but not for Catholics. This act reflected the Puritans' desire for religious freedom while still maintaining restrictions against Catholicism.
World War 1
World War One forced the suspension of the Home Rule Act (although it had been passed in Whitehall) for the duration, thereby averting civil war.
as he faught for the pope, then went on to support the protestants against catholics
Protestants are called protestants because they PROTESTED against the catholic church because Henry viii was catholic but he wanted a divorce but the catholics would not let him, so he started his own church( church of England) and they were called the protestants, also you can not be protestant and catholic.
There is an organization called Catholics Against Circumcision that argues that circumcision is against the spiritual principles of Catholics, and that therefore Catholics should remain intact. It is not a requirement for either Catholics nor Protestants to be circumcised because of their religion like Jews or Moslems. Therefore to ask in which denomination circumcision is more common is irrelevant. It is likely that there is very little difference between them.
To celebrate the victory of William the Orange against the Catholics.
Catholics called them heretics, they called themselves protestants.

Ever since the Protestant Reformation, approximately 500 years ago.

In the United States there were more Protestants than Catholics at the start of the Civil War. The great immigration of Roman Catholics to the United States came after the First Vatican Council. The Bishop of Arkansas voted No when the issue of Papal infallibility was raised. He was one of 2 Bishops to vote against the measure. For some reason a number of Catholics wanted to come to a country that had freedom of religion and where the Pope had no political power. I have no idea why.
Many people in the world see President Assad as a brutal dictator, and the 'terrorists' of Syria as freedom fighters.
