Book of sayings from wise King Solomon during his reign in Israel.

A: The Book of Proverbs follows the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament and is traditionally attributed to King Solomon because of the wisdom narratives. Nevertheless, it was only after considerable argument that the Book of Proverbs was addedto the Hebrew canon at the Council of Jamnia.

Apart from the portrayal of Lady Wisdom (a spirit/goddess identified in the post-Exilic period) in 1:20-33 and chapters 8 and 9, Proverbs chapters 1 to 9 consists of a series of short instructions remarkably similar to those which form a large part of Egyptian wisdom literature. The Instruction of Amen-em-Opethas a particularly close relationship to Proverbs 22:17-24:22.

A: Proverbs is a book of wise teachings and principles for living, primarily from King Solomon. It details godly ways to relate to other people and those in authority. Although such advice could be rather mundane, it is the style and variety of writing which makes it into a great literary work as well...parables, stories, questions, and poetry are employed to deliver the life skills teachings.

The Book of Proverbs is traditionally assigned to King Solomon on the grounds that any book containing wise sayings ought to be attributed to him. The book was actually compiled during the post-Exilic period but includes a good deal of earlier material. Apart from the references to the spirit/goddess Wisdom, Proverbs chapters 1-9 consist of a series of short instructions remarkably similar to those which form a large part of Egyptian wisdom literature.

Much of the first half of Proverbs is devoted to the sayings of Lady Wisdom. At 1:20-23: "Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets; She crieth in the chief places of the concourse, in the openings of the gates; in the city she uttereth he words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you. I will make known my words unto you."

According to Proverbs 8:22-36, Wisdom stood at God's side and participated in the creation of the world, and is God's intermediary with humans.

An interesting mental picture is painted at 9:1-5: "Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city. Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither; as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled."
