Christianity originated roughly 2000 years ago in the Middle East in what was then the Roman province of Judea. The New Testament tells of a Jewish citizen named Jesus of Nazareth, who claimed to be the son of God. He is said to have performed many miracles, and gained devoted followers. His disciples believed that he was the Messiah - a figure spoken of in Jewish prophecy that would usher in a golden age for the Hebrew people. However, some of the religious leaders and other Jews did not believe Jesus, and thought he was a false Messiah. One of Jesus' own disciples turned him over to the authorities, and he was executed by crucifixion. His disciples claimed that three days after he died, he rose again and ascended to heaven.

While the Old Testament of the Bible is based upon the Jewish Torah, the New Testament is about the teachings of Jesus, which is where the two religions split paths. The Jews do not believe that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah, such as ruling over an independent Jewish nation. Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah, and the Greek translation Kristos, is where Christianity got its name from.
