The Book of Revelation was written by the apostle John, and revealed to him by Jesus. It is a prophetic book written in signs that prophecies about events in our time, and what God will do for us in the future.

Another answer:

The book of Revelation is Jesus' "parable" recorded by John concerning the final phases of God's plan of Salvation and the restoration of the Kingdom of God to the earth, that, like all of Jesus' parables is intended for "public consumption"... and NOT INTENDED FOR THE MASSES TO UNDERSTAND.

"His disciples came and asked Him, 'Why do you always use these hard-to-understand illustrations?' Then He explained to them that only they were permitted to understand about the Kingdom of Heaven, and others were not... That is why I use these illustrations, so people will hear and see but not understand.

"This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah: 'They hear, but don't understand; they look, but they don't see! For their hearts are fat and heavy, and their ears are dull, and they have closed their eyes in sleep, so they won't see and hear and understand and turn to God again, and let Me heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

"Many a prophet and godly man has longed to see what you have seen, and hear what you have heard, but couldn't." (Matt.13:10-17 LVB Living Bible)

The book of Revelation "completes" The Bible... and closes it out in keeping with Jesus' public approach to God's Truth -- as a MEANING-HIDING PARABLE that's intended ONLY for the present understanding of His "ekklesia" [His "church," His "elect," His "predestined"... His "called-out-ones"] whom God has been calling out of the world [sanctifying] for His Holy Purpose.

The book of Revelation is ABOUT the "end time events [the fulfillment of the final phases of God's plan] that shall overtake the world, that shall result in the RETURN OF JESUS CHRIST, with the ultimate elimination of sin and death, and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth"... and ends with the mention of a taste of what comes after: a "New Beginning" for God's brand new IMMORTAL FAMILY!

"...'See, I AM making all things new!' And then He said, 'Write this down, for what I tell you is Trustworthy and True: IT IS FINISHED! ...Everyone who conquers WILL INHERIT ALL THESE BLESSINGS, and I will be his God and HE WILL BE MY SON." (Rev.21:5-7 LVB)

Revelation is ABOUT "the time of the end of God's plan" when Jesus Christ will finally be revealed as EARTH'S ALL-POWERFUL RULING KING! Which is the question Jesus' disciples asked Him about in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21:

"...the disciples asked Him later... What events will signal your return [your 'presence'... when will you REVEAL YOURSELF AND YOUR KINGDOM to the world], and the end of the world [and the END OF THE PRESENT AGE]?" (Matt.24:3 LVB)

Although Revelation is ABOUT "the answer to that question"... IT'S STILL A PARABLE! So, those who are "Christ's disciples"... His "servants"... those who "want to know what the parable of the Revelation [the revealing] of these symbolic end time events mean"... have to go to Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 for Jesus' "private" explanation of them TO HIS DISCIPLES:

"Then, leaving the crowds outside, He went into the [His] house. His disciples[there in Jesus' house... IN PRIVATE, away from the crowds] ASKED HIM TO EXPLAIN TO THEM THE ILLUSTRATION [parable] of the thistles and the wheat." (Matt.13:36 LVB)

The book of Revelation is a "parable for the public's consumption" [that the general public is not meant to understand] ABOUT the PRIVATE answer Jesus gave to His disciples with no crowds around, regarding the very same global end time events about which His disciples inquired. Jesus clearly explains the symbols of the "parable of Revelation" to His servants in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21. These three private, intimate accounts... and the Revelation parable all follow the same "chronology" or "order of occurrence."

Revelation is basically broken down into "THREE SETS OF SEVENS." Seven Seals, Seven Trumpets [wind-blown plagues] and Seven Vials [the last of God's plagues poured out on the earth prior to His final descent onto the earth].

SIX of the Seven Seals are all opened in Revelation's 6th chapter. Which devotes the remainder of Revelation's 22 chapters to the SEVENTH SEAL [the DAY OF THE LORD; the Day Jesus Christ returns]. This Seventh Seal is composed of the Seven Trumpets...

"...I saw the seven angels that stand before God, and they were given Seven Trumpets..." (Rev.8:2 LVB).

...and the Seventh Trumpet [still part of the Seventh Seal] becomes the Seven Vial plagues of God's WRATH POURED OUT.

"...a mighty voice shouting from the Temple to the seven angels, 'Now go your ways and empty out the Seven Flasks [vials] OF THE WRATH OF GOD upon the earth.'" (Rev.16:1 LVB)

The book of Revelation is ABOUT the final global events in God's plan that result in the return of Jesus Christ to the earth. Jesus is prophesied to RETURN at the LAST TRUMP... or at the sounding of the SEVENTH TRUMPET... the time when He sends His angels to gather His servants into the clouds with Him; off of the earth, just before the final seven vial plagues of the last of God's wrath are "poured out."

According to the chronology... before the advent of the Seven wind-blown Trumpet plagues... God's servants are still on the earth and are SEALED [by God's Holy Spirit] and under His Divine protection:

"...I saw four angels... holding back the four winds from BLOWING upon the earth... And I saw another angel... carrying the Seal of the Living God. And he shouted out to those four angels who had been given power to injure land and sea, 'WAIT! Don't hurt the land or the sea or the trees until we have placed THE SEAL OF GOD [II Cor.1:22 & Eph.1:13] on the foreheads of His servants." (Rev.7:1-3 NLT New Living Translation)

Bible prophecy tells us that Jesus Christ returns to gather His servants unto Himself AT THE LAST TRUMPET. Which means that they REMAIN ON THE EARTH during the entire Great Tribulation, which is when the Seven Trumpet plagues are released by the Two Witnesses for three-and-a-half years [see Rev.11]. It's at the time of the sounding of the Seventh Trumpet that God's servants LEAVE THE EARTH for a short time with Christ in the clouds, until the Seven Vial plagues occur.

"...just then the SEVENTH [and last] angel blew his Trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting down from heaven, 'The Kingdom of this world NOW BELONGS TO OUR LORD, and to His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever." (Rev.11:15 LVB)

The parable symbols of the book of Revelation are explained and understood by Christ's servants within other prophetic passages of the Bible, that reveal the Truth of God to their hearts and minds [see Isa.66:2]. The Spirit of Christ throughout the Bible; even in the book of Revelation, speaks to His servants:

"...An angel was sent to God's servant John so that John could share the revelation with God's OTHER SERVANTS..." (Rev.1:1 NLT).

But to those who are NOT Christ's [the vast majority of the masses, crowds and general public that aren't Sealed with the Truth of the Holy Spirit]... they cannot know what the parable of the book of Revelation is ABOUT -- yet.

The book of Revelation tells of God's ultimate victory over evil and the promise of salvation and eternal life for believers. It emphasizes the need for faith, perseverance, and loyalty to God, even in the face of tribulation and persecution. Ultimately, it encourages readers to trust in God's plan for the world and to remain steadfast in their beliefs.

AnswerRevelation is regarded as one of the apocalyptic books, a genre that includes Ezekiel among others. The final layer of the book certainly seems to have been written as messages to seven churches, but that does not seem to be the message of the book as a whole.

In fact, it is said that the book only survived because it is signed by a 'John', and someone made the connection between this John and the apostle John. Many scholars now say that it could not have been written by the apostle John, nor by the author of John's Gospel. They refer to this author as John of Patmos.

The Book of revelation is enigmatic enough that you can take almost any message you like out of it. Many Christians read it as, at least in part, a message of the second coming of Jesus. Others say that it proves there will only be 144,000 places in heaven, and that millions of others must inevitably miss out.
