Nebuchadnezzar was a mighty king of Babylon and in the Book of Daniel had a dream, which Daniel interpreted as meaning that the mighty king would eat grass like an ox, and this is just what happened soon afterwards. This story was apparently based on a Jewish Propaganda scroll, a portion of which was discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls and is now known as 4Q242 or the Prayer of Nabonidus.

The text of 4Q242 is intermediate between Babylonian texts and the Book of Daniel, and shows how the story evolved from the historical original through an intermediate, semi-historical stage to the entirely fictional story in Daniel.

In the Book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar is the king of Babylon who has a dream about a giant statue made of different materials. Daniel interprets the dream, explaining that the statue represents kingdoms that will rise and fall, with a rock (symbolizing God's kingdom) destroying them all. Nebuchadnezzar later becomes arrogant and is punished by God, living as a wild animal until he acknowledges God's sovereignty.

The Book of Daniel is placed in the time of the Babylonian Exile and concerns a person called Daniel, who was portrayed as growing up in the Babylonian court and rising to become the second most important person in the entire Babylonian empire, then after the fall of Babylon, the second most important person in the Persian empire.

The Book of Daniel is rich in parallels to the story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis. Like Joseph, he is taken as a slave to Babylon, where he becomes renowned as an interpreter of dreams. It is that ability that brings him to the attention of the king, who soon gives him responsibility for the empire, just as Joseph was.

There are several famous and imaginative passages in the Book of Daniel. In one, because they worship God, the friends of Daniel are thrown into a furnace so hot that their guards are killed in the intense heat, but they survive unscathed. In another, a literary parallel, the king is tricked into throwing Daniel into a den of lions because he prayed to God, but Daniel survived untouched.

Writing in the second century BCE, the author knew that the Babylonian kingdom would soon be overthrown. With a limited understanding of history, he believed that Babylon was overthrown by the Medes, who were then conquered by the Persians. In fact, the Medes were conquered by the Persians before the conquest of Babylon. He also knew that Persia would be conquered by Alexander, whose empire would break into the Hellenistic pieces after his death. The Book of Daniel describes a dream in which there was a statue with a golden head, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs of iron and feet partly of iron and clay. In the book, Daniel said that the head represented the Babylonian empire and that each part of the statue represented another empire to follow.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not biological brothers. They were friends and companions of Daniel from the Book of Daniel in the Bible. They were all Jewish captives taken to Babylon and served King Nebuchadnezzar.

Who did God turn into an animal who ate grass?

Daniel 4:33 - That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws. God didn't literally turn Nebuchadnezzar into an animal; He stripped away the higher faculties that separates man from animals. Daniel 5:21 - Then he was driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.

Did Nebuchadnezzar write chapter 4 of the Book of Daniel?

No, Nebuchadnezzar did not write any part of the book of Daniel. In fact, scholars now know that the book was really written in the second century BCE, long after the events it depicts. The Book of Daniel draws a close parallel between the legendary patriarch Joseph, who interpreted dreams for his captor, the king of Egypt, and Daniel, who interpreted dreams for his captor, the king of Babylon. Chapter 4 begins by declaring its author to be Nebuchadnezzar, who describes his dream and how only Daniel could interpret it. Nebuchadnezzar then explains what Daniel told him, but when Daniel's story finishes, verses 28 to 33 accidentally slip into talking of Nebuchadnezzar in the third person - a certain give-away that Nebuchadnezzar had not really been writing. Then verses 34 to 37 revert to the style of having been written by Nebuchadnezzar. Further confusing the evidence for authorship by Nebuchadnezzar, verses 2 and 3 begin by Nebuchadnezzar praising Daniel's God, but verse 8 makes it clear that Nebuchadnezzar has another god and talks of the "holy gods", just as a pagan would. Overall the chapter 'proves' that Daniel's God is supreme, for which reason, Nebuchadnezzar blessed the most High (4:34) and praised the King of heaven (4:37). How could this be if he then sat down and wrote an historical account, unapologetically saying that he had another god? By putting Nebuchadnezzar's experiences in the first person, the author of Daniel was making an otherwise implausible episode seem plausible. His dogmatic statements about God avoided contradiction because they came from no less a source than Nebuchadnezzar.

It takes place in Daniel Chapter 6.
