Catholic missionaries traveled to regions of Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Protestant missionaries focused on regions like Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas. Missionary efforts were often influenced by colonial powers and the desire to spread Christianity globally.
A favorite target of Christian missionaries in the late nineteenth century was Africa, particularly countries in West Africa due to the perceived lack of Christian presence and the opportunity for expansion of their faith. Missionaries sought to convert the indigenous populations to Christianity and establish churches and schools in these regions.
Islam is predominant in the coastal areas of Tanzania and Kenya, however as one moves further inland remnants of the colonial period have made their mark and an equal proportion of different Christianity groups are very widespread. East Africa has a fairly high percentage (approx 15%) of practicing traditional religions, and main groups include the Maasai and Haya. It is also worth noting that definitions for East Africa are extremely varied. These can include the geographical East Africa (so everything from Egypt south to Mozambique), or definition by language amongst others. My definition is the common placed definition, which includes Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda. I have not included the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Dijouti, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia).
In the 1700s, the primary religions in Africa were Indigenous African religions, Islam, and Christianity. The specific dominant religion varied by region, with Islam being prevalent in North Africa and along the Swahili coast, while Christianity gained popularity in regions influenced by European colonial powers. Indigenous African religions also continued to be practiced by many communities.
