The book of Ruth appears to have been written by the Deuteronomist in the 7th century BCE, either as part of the Book of Judges or as a separate book. The case for Ruth having been once part of Judges is to be found in the first century CE. The Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus, presented a three-part division of the Old Testament, similar to the known Hebrew canon, but he counted only 22 books, not the 24 that we would have expected (Since that time, there has been some reorganising of the books as originally presented - for example Kings being divided into 1 Kings and 2 Kings). In order to get the same books as the Hebrew canon, it is supposed by some scholars that Ruth had until then formed part of Judges and that Lamentations was counted with Jeremiah.
