The Church of the East began in the first century when early missionaries established churches in what is now Iraq. In the 5th century a bishop named Nestorius had a falling out with the pope because he wouldn't preach that Mary was divine. Since Nestorius was from the East, all the churches in the East were labelled "Nestorians" and heretics by the Catholic church, even though they had no heretical beliefs. In the 1980's the pope apologized to the patriarch of the Church of the East for this unfair treatment. Today they are known as Chaldeans or Assyrian Christians and are severely persecuted.

The Nestorians began in the Near East, particularly in the regions of Persia and Mesopotamia, as followers of Nestorius, the Archbishop of Constantinople. They developed their own distinctive theological beliefs that were eventually declared heretical by the Christian church.

Are Chaldeans monotheistic?

Pope Eugene IV (1431- 1447) signed an agreement with certain dissident Nestorian groups in Mesopotamia in 1444 and in Cyprus in 1445. The Nestorians of Cyprus thus converted to Catholicism as a whole, and their bishop asked that they be called Chaldeans from that time on. Therefore, the Chaldeans were monotheistic.

Did vikings of Norway come from Israel?

Some people think Scandinavia and England were populated by the lost tribes of Israel. Seems unlikely to me. At various times the Nestorians, the Mormons, the Afghans, the Falashas of Ethiopia, the American Indians, and the Japanese have also been said to be descendants of the lost tribes.
