Assisi, Italy
St. Francis (founder of the Franciscan Order) was born Giovanni Bernardone, the son of a wealthy merchant in Assisi, in Umbria (central Italy).

In 1205 he joined the military, but was stopped by a dream. He returned home and devoted himself to the care of the poor and sick. On April 16,1206 he was inspired to rebuild the ruined church of San Damiano. He renounced his patrimony and lived as a hermit. By 1210 he had a brotherhood of 11 and in 1219 he had 5000 members of his order. He died on Oct. 4, 1224 and was canonized by the pope in 1228. He is buried in Assisi below the church he helped rebuild. It is simple and powerful small chapel.
