Elijah
The prophet who executed the prophets of Baal after God consumed his offering with fire was Elijah.
Elijah mocked the false prophets by suggesting that Baal was sleeping or busy when they called on him to send down fire to light their sacrifice. He challenged them to call louder or try harder to get Baal's attention, knowing that their false god was powerless.
Eliyahu (Elijah) set up a showdown, during which the idolatrous "prophets" of the baal produced no results from their god, but the true God did visibly answer Eliyahu's prayer. The idolatrous "prophets" were then killed. See 1 Kings ch.18.
King Ahab and his wife Jezebel were the evil rulers of the northern kingdom. Elijah 3 years prior proclaimed there would be a drought and no rain, but now God tells Elijah to go and talk to Ahab and there will be rain. Elijah tells Ahab to gather all the prophets of Baal and the prophets of Asherah on Mount Carmel. It was the false prophets of Baal (450) that were killed ( I Kings 18.)
One thought:After God used Elijah to destroy the pagan prophets of Baal(1 Kings 18:30-40), King Ahab and his wife Jezebel were outraged. Jezebel swore to kill Elijah(1 Kings 19:1-4) so he ran 200 miles away and hid in caves of Mt Sinai.
In the Old Testament book of 1 Kings, chapter 18 verses 18 through 38 it tells about Elijah and the prophets of Baal. They built an alter to their god Baal, and Elijah built one to God Almighty. They both had everything they needed except fire. The Baal prophets called to their god and nothing happened. Elijah called to God Almighty and fire came down and consumed everything.
When the prophets of Baal prayed for Baal to send fire, nothing happened. Despite their fervent pleas and efforts, Baal remained silent and did not respond to their prayers. This event is described in the Bible in the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18.
Elijah asked the pagan prophets of Baal to put more water on the sacrifice he was giving to the living God.
450 prophets is the answer :)
The prophet who executed the prophets of Baal after God consumed his offering with fire was Elijah.
The prophet was Elijah.
There are about 1,000 prophets in the Bible, including 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the sacred pole. (1 Kings 18:18, 19)
Elijah mocked the false prophets by suggesting that Baal was sleeping or busy when they called on him to send down fire to light their sacrifice. He challenged them to call louder or try harder to get Baal's attention, knowing that their false god was powerless.
This event happened on Mount Carmel. The Carmel range of mountains extend about 30 miles and the highest point is 1800 ft. It is not know at what point along this range Elijah encountered the prophets of Baal.
In 1 Kings 18:19-40, Elijah suggested that Baal failed to hear the false prophets because Baal was either on a journey, deep in thought, or asleep. This was part of Elijah's challenge to demonstrate the power of the true God of Israel over the false god Baal. By mocking the prophets of Baal, Elijah highlighted the impotence of their deity in contrast to the living God who would answer by fire. Ultimately, God responded to Elijah's prayer, proving His sovereignty and power.
Elijah proved that Yahweh was the one true God during the contest on Mount Carmel, where he challenged the prophets of Baal to a demonstration of divine power. Both sides prepared sacrifices but without igniting the fire themselves. While the prophets of Baal called upon their god in vain all day, Elijah prayed to Yahweh, who sent down fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice, proving His supremacy. This miraculous event led the people to recognize Yahweh as the one true God.
