Matthew and Mark: "But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias [Salome] danced before them, and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother" (Matt. 14: 6-11; Mark 6: 21-28).

Herodias was the wife of Herod Antipas, who was a ruler during the time of Jesus. She played a role in the beheading of John the Baptist, as John had spoken out against her marriage to Herod. Herodias is known for her vengeful nature and desire to eliminate those who opposed her.

In the New Testament, Herodias had married Philip, the brother of King Herod Antipas. John the Baptist preached against this marriage which was incestuous according to Old Testament Law. Herod had John imprisoned but was afraid to execute the popular prophet. Herodias was furious that John had publicly condemned her and she "held it against him and wanted to kill him" (Mark 16:19). Her chance came when Herodias's daughter danced at a feast Herod gave, and the king effusively told the young woman to namer her own reward. When she looked to her mother for advice, Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist.

Whose entrancing dance proved fatal for John the Baptist?

It was the daughter of Herodias(Matthew 14:6-11), most likely Salome.Herod Philip was the first husband of Herodias, before she divorced him to marry his half brother, Herod Antipas (Matthew 14:3, Mark 6:17, 18, Luke 3:19); something John the baptist condemned. To get back at John for denouncing the relationship, Herodias arranged a way to have him killed, using her daughter's seductive dance. The name of the daughter is not in the Bible account, but the writings of Josephus make clear that Philip and Herodias had a daughter, named Salome(Herodias' only daughter), so she is generally believed to be the dancer in question.(Matthew 14:1-13; Mark 6:17-29).

What family member of Herod wanted John the Baptist beheaded?

Herodias, the sister-in-law, then wife, of Herod.Mark 6:14-29 is the account in question. Herod married Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip (something that John spoke out against). Herodias then wanted John dead, so when her daughter (probably Solome) from her previous marriage, was asked to dance, Herodias asked her to request the head of John as payment.

Who was involved in Johns the Baptist's death?

King Herod, his brother's wife Herodias, and her daughter were involved in John the Baptist's death. Herodias' daughter performed a sensual dance to please King Herod, and he promised her anything that she wanted. She asked her mother what she should request, and Herodias told her daughter to ask for John the Baptist's head on a platter. Because King Herod gave his word, he was forced to give the daughter what she asked for, and the daughter took the head to Herodias.
