In his Commentary Adam Clarke states:
Mar 3:17 -
Sons of thunder - A Hebraism for thunderers; probably so named because of their zeal and power in preaching the Gospel. The term Boanerges is neither Hebrew nor Syriac...the ancient Greeks would pronounce Beneregem, and which means sons of thunder, was probably the appellative used by our Lord: beni reges, sons of tempest, which comes nearest to the Boanerges of the evangelist.... Some think that the reason why our Lord gave this appellative to the sons of Zebedee was, their desire to bring fire down from heaven, i.e. a storm of thunder and lightning, to overturn and consume a certain Samaritan village, the inhabitants of which would not receive their Master. See the account in Luk_9:53, Luk_9:54. It was a very usual thing among the Jews to give surnames, which signified some particular quality or excellence, to their rabbins. ..

Mark 3:16 - Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter;Peter means "a rock or a stone."Mark 3:17 - James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder";To the best of my research, these are the only New Testament mentions of Jesus giving what we would think of as "nicknames."
James and John, two of Jesus's disciples, were nicknamed "Sons of Thunder." This nickname was likely given to them by Jesus Himself, as mentioned in Mark 3:17 and Matthew 10:2, possibly due to their zealous and fiery personalities. It may have referred to their passionate and sometimes impetuous nature, reflecting their boldness and fervor in spreading Jesus's teachings. Mark 3:17: "And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder"Dennis R MacDonald (The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark) has researched Homeric parallels in Mark's Gospel. He says the two disciples, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who are nicknamed "Boanerges," or "sons of thunder" are comparable to another pair of brothers, the Dioscuri, sons of Zeus.Zeus is often associated with thunder, and his sons are depicted iconographically as on the right and left of an enthroned deity, similarly to James' and John's request to sit at the right and left of Jesus in the kingdom (Mark 10:37). So, based on MacDonald's research, the reference to "thunder" has the hidden meaning of Zeus, according to the rules of mimesis applied in Greek literature of the first century.
Boanerges comes from the Hebrew phrase bnei regesh (בני רגדש) which means "children of feelings" or "children of emotion"
