Jesus chided him, picked the ear up and miraculously re-attached the soldiers ear.
This is a most interesting passage and totally misunderstood. John
was a Mystic. This is a mystic allegory. The ear is the RIGHT ear of the servant, Malchus. In mystic teaching (www.RSSB.org for more) the sound of the Lord, the WORD, or Name of the Lord, is actually audible to the devotee, and heard on the right side, hence "right ear". It is "cut" by Peter's "sword". Swords are symbols of the spirit in many places. See Rev. 1:16 and Zechariah 13:7 (where it is "Strike, O Shepherd" with the sword of spirit, not "Strike the shepherd"). Notice Jesus touches it and heals HIM. He is healing Malchus spiritually, to make him whole, not healing only the ear. judaswasjames dot com

MALCHUS
No roman soldier actually had his ear cut off. The incident occurred as soldiers came to arrest Jesus, and with them were some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. The gospels of Matthew and Luke do not record the name of the disciple who cut off the ear of a servant of the high priest. John 18:10 records that it was Simon Peter, and that the servant's name was Malchus.
