According to Jewish tradition, Moses was the greatest of all the prophets. He reached the highest level that a human being can reach in understanding G-d and his ways. He was sent by G-d to take the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage and bring them to Mount Sinai where they received the Torah from G-d. He continued to be the leader for 40 years while the Israelites wandered in the desert as a punishment for the sin of the spies. 4 of the 5 books of the Torah center around Moses as the central figure.
