Both are crocodilians, having the same general shape. Alligators have a broader snout than crocodiles, and usually the teeth are concealed when the animal's mouth is closed. Crocodile's teeth protrude from the jaws. Both lay their eggs in nests of decaying vegetation, and both species guard the nest and young for a time.
