The largest common pet tortoise is probably the spur-thighed, or Sulcata, tortoise. These tortoises can weigh up to 100 pounds when fully grown! A far cry from the Golf-ball sized hatchling you might see in a pet store! Not a pet for someone who doesn't have a specially built enclosed pasture. These guys eat grass, and lots of it.

Aldabra tortoises are now available in the pet trade too, but they are still exceptionally expensive, at over $1000. These are among the largest tortoises in the world, and are beyond the capabilities of most people to care for properly. Weighing up to 560 pounds, these herbivores need extensive grazing pasture, and a LOT of room. Can you imagine trying to move one inside if he didn't want to go?
