How do you take care of a bearded dragon?

Truth is they can't be trained as far as doing tricks. You can train them that when they see you putting your hand in they will come to you to be held by always using the same way when you go to pick them up. That also assumes the dragon wants to be picked up. My dragons have been handled since they were babies and will climb to the top when I open their cage to make it easier to pick them up.

They can also be "potty trained" One of my dragons will only poop when I bathe her which means I have to soak her every day. If I am too busy in the morning she will wait til later when I can soak her. If I am gone for a long time she will eventually go in her cage but she doesnt like it. Bearded dragons "supposedly" have very acute hearing as well. Their ear drums are very close to the surface of their heads.

A bearded Dragon as well as any animal can be tamed with love and care. They need to be handled as often as possible so it can be used to being around humans. Basically the dragon should cometo understnd that humans are not a threat. I was ab;e to tame a Dragon that was very aggressive with people and bit alot as well after only a month of me picking him up and handilng him every day. Also A Beardie could be aggresive because of its heath. A healthy dragon is a happy one after all!

Their are Many Ways you can hold them, as long as they are secure it shouldn't really matter, but here are the best ways to hold a bearded dragon...

Image you are holding a vase horizontally, With your hands firmly (not tightly) wrapped around his/hers body with their legs free at either end of your hands. Another way to let him/her clench around your arm/hand while your hand is vertical- this provides a good muscle build, but may scratch you. Bearded dragons are some of the most easy to handle lizards. Provide clean cage with sand substrate, a basking rock/limb to get closer to heat lamp, heat lamp, water dish, with fresh clean water, food dish, for leafy greens and worm insects, cave type dwelling to escape the heat. Primarily will eat crickets and millworms. Can use calcium powder on insects to provide more calcium and vitamins. Can be fed pinky mice as the dragon matures, though this should not be done on a regular basis as a problem with the livers can occur. Handle often to keep a social animal.

Added: Bearded dragons require very specific care and can be costly. They are gentle and friendly as adults if handled when they are babies. They require heat lighting to keep the ambient temp of their cage around 80 degrees with a basking spot of about 105 degrees. Sand is not a good substrate as they like to taste things and this can cause an impaction. With babies you can just use peper towl on the bottom of the cage. I use textured tile which is easy to keep clean. They eat live feed as babies. Depending on their age they will eat 2-3 times a day. Once they are about 6 months you can feed them live feed once a day and as adults live feed can be every other day. Crickets, silk worms are best for them and once they are 16 inches or more you can give them superworms. Mealworms are terrible for them as are wax worms. They need UVB light which needs to be changed every 6 months. and fresh appropriate greens and veggies every day. They generally will not drink from a water dish so providing them a warm soak as part of their routine care helps to keep them hydrated. They get most of their hydration from their food. If your cage is large enough there is no need for a hide. The temps in a good sized cage can range from 75-90 degrees so they can choose where they want to be. If they spend too much time under a hide they will be lacking the UVB exposure that they need to absorb calcium and it can cause serious-fatal health risks. You can use regular household lights for heat but the UVB light is very specific. The wrong kind can eventually kill your dragon. Start up cost= about $250

bearded dragons are very intelegent creatures. They defenetly need a uva/uvb light. if you want to tell the gender of your bearded dragon, then put it in your hand like up and down, and make sure the stomach is facing you. Look on top of the "vent" and if there are 2 lumps, its a boy, if there are none or one, its a girl. You can probably check their gender, when they are about, 1-2 years old. I feed my bearded dragon (spyro) millworms, and crickets. Baby bearded dragons should have either medium or small crickets, and probably 1 in morning, and one in the night. They should have these coloured pellets which give them their vitamins. They may not eat them, so ask a vet for help. ,y tank is about a 35g tarrerium. I have 2 lights, a drinking pad (which you don't want to fill up high because they may drown) a heat pad, a rock, a log, a hut, and some plants. You should buy the calcium powder, as bearded dragons NEED their calcium. You have to get a medium sized aquarium, depending on what size your new pet is. Keep in mind that it grows rapidly, so you might have to get a large one.

Get a nice big branch for him or her to sit on for sunning, get a heat lamp for reptiles for your pet to sun, and a regular reptile lamp, then, make sure that you have a cooler place for your bearded dragon to chill. You must also get a few plants, (alive, or plastic, plastic is better, unless you want to water everyday) where he can climb. You should also have a den, or sleeping place for him, like some rocks safely put on top of each other with a good space underneath. Some good bedding is important, such as sand for reptiles, or some eco earth - loose coconut shavings or wood shavings work well. Last but not least, you must have a good water and food bowl, not too tall, but not too short either. Babies need more alive things to eat such as mealworms and crickets, but they also must have greens such as salad. Adults need more salad, but still crickets and meal worms as well. Remember to never feed too much, or too little.
