Across the globe, nearly all species of sea turtles is either endangered or critically endangered. This is so for several different reasons, two main reasons are for the consumption of their meet, and for their shells, often used as jewelery and other accessories. They are hunted heavily in Mexico, Japan, and in many other Asian, Central and South American countries. Sea turtles, though on the Endangered Species List, are still struggling in the United States as well. Many sea turtles in oceans worldwide are killed accidentally by fishing nets intending to catch other marine life. Waters polluted with oil also add to the mortality rate. Sea turtle eggs are also threatened due to their high demand, especially for the consumption of their meat. Over-development also plays a role in preventing ideal nesting sites for sea turtles laying eggs, as well as hindering the hatchlings who attempt to make it back to the ocean. With sea turtles maturing as late as 30-50 years, and only about 1 out of 100 hatchlings reaching the ocean safely after being hatched, even in ideal conditions, the odds are now greatly lessened as hunting and human expansion increases, creating a threatening ripple effect in the future of this marine animal which the ocean depends on so heavily.
