Over-development also plays a role in preventing ideal nesting sites for sea turtles laying eggs, as well as hindering the hatchlings who attempt to make it back to the ocean. With sea turtles maturing as late as 30-50 years, and only about 1 out of 100 hatchlings reaching the ocean safely after being hatched, even in ideal conditions, the odds are now greatly lessened as hunting and human expansion increases, creating a threatening ripple effect in the future of this marine animal which the ocean depends on so heavily.
