The coloring in the mix used to make Starbucks' Strawberries & Creme frappuccino contained ground insects. Specifically, ground cochineal beetles were used to give that distinctive pink hue. It was viewed as a more green alternative to using traditional food coloring. As of April 2012 though, Starbucks has stated that no later than the end of June it will begin using lycopene (a tomato based extract) food coloring in its drinks after the news of the insect laden drink caused an uproar in the vegan and vegetarian community.
