There are three basic types of pulleys and belts. Three very common types would be round, v-shaped, and flat. Each type of belt requires a matching pulley type. For example, a flat-type belt would require a compatible flat shaped pulley, where the surface of friction is smooth and flat. Most other belts are some variation of these three types. Any of these types of belts may be ribbed, toothed, or some hybrid of any of the above types.

What is a belt and pulley?

Click on the Related Link below and scroll down the page. There are photos of the front of a motor. The belt is a long, thin, black rubberized band -- it's one long loop. The pulleys are round. The belt is placed on top over the pulleys. One pulley can be moved a little so that the belt can be made tighter or loser. Why all that stuff? When the motor runs it turns one of the pulleys, and that makes the belt move (cause its tight on the pulley) and the belt moving causes all the other pulleys to turn. So the fan turns to cool the radiator.. So the alternator turns and makes electiricity to charge the battery. Etc. Etc. A pulley is a wheel with a groove and a the belt is what runs through those grooves which spins the pulley. The pulley spins which turns a pump in a power steering pump or coil in a alternator.

Why does a new serpentine belt sqeak?

Sometimes the old belt leaves a residue in the grooves of the pulleys. Clean the grooves of all the pulleys with a wire brush, and reinstall the serpintine. You also might have a bad belt tensioner.

How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1992 Chevy Lumina 3.1?

Look at all the pulleys and you'll see one that isn't really connected to anything like the power steering unit, alternator, water pump or the engine. It's connected only to an "arm". This arm is spring loaded and is what provides the "tension" to the belt. If I recall, there's a nub that you can put an adjustable wrench on and use the wrench as "leverage" to swing the arm and release the tension. Then with your other hand, get the loosened belt off of the alternator pulley first (since it's a small pulley and it's right on top). Now you can release the arm since you have the belt started and the rest is elementary. Reinstall the same way...get it almost all the way on exept for on the alternater, pry the arm to give slack, slip over the alternator last and you're done. This belt is grooved with an exect number of grooves. This grooves match grooves on all the pulleys. Make sure the belt is lined up in all the grooves-especially the very bottom pulley...the crankshaft-it's the one most likely to be not quite on because it's hard to see while you're prying with the wrench.

Where is a tensioner pulley on a 1981 Oldsmobile omega?

When looking at the engine from the front, the tension pulley is the only wheel on the drive belt that has the belt on the inside of it. All of the other pulleys have the belt going around the top of the pulley. The tension pulley has a bolt that can be loosened and then tightened to remove the drive belt.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM?

Locate the tensioner pulley within the engine bay. It usually is near the top and middle of the engine, above the crank and fan pulleys. You can recognize it by noting that Avery other pulley in the engine bay has grooves that the servpentine belt rests in but the tensioner pulley is smooth and the belt rides on the smooth side of the belt. Once you find the smooth tensioner pulley, look at the middle of it. There will be a 6 point (hex) stud that you want to use a long-handled socket wrench upon. you may even need a breaker bar to get enough leverage to overcome the tensioners spring. turn the socket wrench in the direction which pulls the pulley away from the belt. there is a lot of force involved so don't let go or use the wrong size socket as it may slip possibly injuring you or anyone that may be helping you.You will most likely need another person to help you remove the belt and install the new one since you will be using two hands to releive the pressure of the pulley. After the belt is removed, you may slowly let the tensioner back down while you wind the new belt around all but the tensioner pulley. Carefully crank back the tensioner pulley until the belt can be sliped underneath the pulley and slowly release it back down upon the belt. Check to ensure the serpentine belt hasn't derailed from all the grooves from any pulleys. After that, starterup. Good luck. KrispyKreemD

How do you replace fan belt for 1996 GMC suburban?

To replace the drive belt on a '96 Suburban you have to release the tention on the tentioner pulley with a wrench or socket. Once you get the belt off of at least one pulley you can release the tentioner pulley. Remove the belt the rest of the way. To re-install the belt follow the routing guide under the hood. To get the belt all the way on you'll have to release the tentioner on the pulley again to get the belt all the way on. Once the belt is all the way on release the pulley and inspect the belt to make sure it's all the way on all the pulleys. Remove the wrench or socket and you're done. Hope this helps, good luck.

How do you change the serpentine belt on your 1994 Grand Caravan?

This is easier than it may look. Look at all the rollers/ulleys that the belt must pass over/around/through. The ones that are smooth are the ones that get the back end of the belt and are used to change the direction of the belt. The ones with grooves are the ones that are actually driven by the belt. One of the rollers near the top and towards the firewall is actually spring loaded. I believe it is the one that is 2nd nearest to the firewall. Put a wrench on it and pull. You will see it rocks downward allowing you to jump the belt onto it. So, the way to get it is to thread the belt over all of the rollers except this one (the grooves on the belt face would in when you thread it if it were a pure circle), making sure you are driving the proper pulleys (as described in the first paragraph). With the belt threaded over all but the pulley you can pivot, pull with a wrench on this tensioning pulley and work the belt onto it... It self tensions so at that point you are done. Start @ front of vehicle w/ AC pulley work your way down and backward until you have reached the alternator pulley. [Note] this means laying the belt on the tensioner.. The alternator pulley will be the last to put on; as you can not put the belt on the tensioner with a wrench on it. Once the belt is routed in the manner described in both answers (except the laying belt on tensioner in this answer) put 15 metric long handle boxed wrench on tensioner and pull towards you. Slip the belt over alternator pulley. THEN your done.

How do tou change a serpentine belt on a 2000 olds bravada?

First, make sure there is a diagram that shows just how the belt winds around all the pulleys. There should be a sticker right above the fan. If it is not there get a flash light and make your own diagram. CHECK IT TWICE! Just below the alternator is a tension pulley. It is a wheel that's only purpose it to keep the belt tight. When I change mine, I can get my arm in behind the tension pulley and push it in. That loosens the belt and you can remove it. If you aren't strong enough to push it in you will have to use a crow bar. Be careful what you use for leverage. There are a lot of hoses down there. You may need to put a small block of wood below the pulley and use that to rest your crow bar on as you push against the pulley. As I said, I am able to push it in with my hand and I am not a big guy. As you push the pulley in, I find it easiest to slide the belt off the very top pulley. It is smooth and just to the right of the alternator. Next put your new belt on just like the diagram. I find that it is easiest to put the belt around all the pulleys but the very top pulley (it is just to the right of the alternator.) It is smooth and doesn't do anything but guide the belt. Push the tension pulley in (with the belt already on it) and slide the belt onto the last pulley on top. If you are having trouble, make sure the belt is centered on all the pulleys. Once you get the belt on DOUBLE CHECK that the belt fits around each pulley just like the diagram. Also make sure that the belt is centered on each pulley. Most of the pulley wheels with have 6 grooves on them. If the belt is off by one groove, it will be torn apart in about 2 minutes. If everything is centered, you are good to go.

What if there is smoke coming from the drive belt area at the left of the engine of a 97 mercury sable but it is not the belt?

remove drive belt and check all pulley wheels for freedom of movement sounds like a pulley wheel is bad, probably the belt tensioner pulley

How do you install a fan belt on a Dodge Caravan?

First draw a map of the pulley wheels then draw the belt routing. You need a good quality extra long 15 mm combo wrench (snap on ) to be honest this belt can be a toughie if you are not a technician. It has a tight spring tensioner, and is tough on the hands. Also, replace the tensioner around 80,000 miles as they wear and tend to throw the belt off. Pull on auto tensioner with long 15mm wrench until the belt loosens. Slip belt over pulley, reverse procedure, make sure the belt is in all the grooves.

Can you show me please the tensioner pulley?

The serpentine belt runs from the crankshaft pulley to all the units that need to be turned, alternator, power steering, water pump, etc. There is one pulley that is spring loaded that keeps the correct tension on the belt. That is the tensioner pulley. That can be moved to release the tension on the belt so that the belt can be removed.
