There were different types of roller blades invented that are considered the predecessors of those used today. However, it is believed that the first pair was made in 1735 in Belgium by John Joseph Merlin, and they were inline skates.

As far as I know, the first inline skates (rollerblades) were invented back in the 1700's, however, their popularity came to rise in the 1980s when the Rollerblade company created the modern style rollerblades.

The very earliest roller skates, c. 1820, looked more like roller blades than what we call skates today, but they were not very maneuverable. They were 're-invented' in the 1980s and were quite popular for about a decade.

Roller blades became increasingly popular during the late 1980's. Their popularity lasted until the early 90's. However, they were originally invented in 1863.
