he felt better and happy but still a little ill
Roger Chillingworth was Hester Prynne's husband. This is not actually his real name. He changed it to Roger Chillingworth because he did not want to live with the shame of having an unfaithful wife. Roger Chillingworth is a scholar who also knows both European and Indian medicines.
Chillingworth is Hester's Husband. He doesn't want the towns people to know because he will be labeled as the sinner's husband that no one knew of. So instead he changed his name to Chillingworth and is in town to find the man who impregnated Hester.
Roger Chillingworth is Mr. Dimmesdale's physician. His real name is not actually Roger Chillingworth, but changed it to be so, so that nobody would find out that he's Hester's husband who has been gone for so long. He also does not want to be associated badly because of her sin. So, he poses as Dimmesdale's physician, while, for the most part, he's mostly looking for the dark secrets of Dimmesdale's heart and mind.
Nathaniel Hawthorne believed that the innermost secrets and motives of a human being can manifest themselves, at first subtly and eventually more intense, in the appearance of the characters. This is why Arthur Dimmesdale is getting sicker and sicker and why Hester is looking less and less beautiful. However, in Chillingworth's case, he looks more and more misshapen and dark. His shoulder is increasingly deformed and he grows a sinister beard and has a dark look on his face with a dark malice in his eyes. He appears as if he has something very evil in his heart.
Millicent changed her mind about initiation after realizing the negative impact it had on her peers and the values it represented. She observed the pressure and humiliation that her friends faced, which conflicted with her own beliefs about friendship and integrity. Ultimately, her desire to stand up for her friends and foster a more supportive environment led her to reject the initiation process.
He was once a man who was very civilized and respected. He came from England, and was captured by the Indians. From this experience he learned to concoct all kinds of different herbs and medicines to help sickness. When he escaped from the Indians, he went to the colony where his wife was supposed to be waiting for him. He found her with a child from another man. This flung him into an outrage and changed his whole personality. He became a devilish man set on revenge at whatever the cost. He vowed to find the man who did this and to punish him. He began his search and soon found out that the father of this child was Rev. Mr. Dimmesdale. Mr. Dimmesdale was a very sick man and Chillingworth used this as an excuse to move into his home and become his physician.
Hester notices that Chillingworth's features have grown darker and more evil-looking since they last met, suggesting that his obsession with seeking revenge on Dimmesdale has made him more sinister and corrupt. This change in his appearance reflects the malicious intent that has consumed him.
