The more words you read and hear will help you build your vocabulary. If you come across a word you do not understand, write it down. Then, look it up in the dictionary to get its meaning and an idea of words (synonyms) that may have similar meanings. Write some sentences using the word and look for it in your reading. In school, we all have had spelling lists, but for some this is torture. My feeling is having students find great words in their reading and bring them to share in class is worthwhile.
