Everyone deals with varying levels of conflict on a more regular basis than may be consciously realized. Conflicts can exist between people, between companies and their employees, and also between an individual and a situation in general. Each person’s ability to effectively deal with conflict varies greatly as well, but it’s safe to assume that a majority of people would rather avoid conflict if at all possible. Conflict has the tendency to push people out of their comfort zones and this creates stress. The intended outcome to a conflict is resolution and there are some basic steps that anyone can benefit from when they are taken into consideration. Although areas and degrees of opportunity will differ among the individual, there are potential areas for improvement for everyone.
When conflict rears its ugly face, the parties involved are encouraged to respectfully and tactfully state their respective case for concern. Once the issues are clearly communicated the steps towards conflict resolution must continue until a conclusion is reached. Differences in views or opinions are often good opportunities to explore new perspectives and in some cases discussion may resolve a conflict quickly. In other situations this is where the intensity in the situation can rise to new levels. An area for improvement for everyone is found in this stage of the conflict because losing one’s composure is the worst thing that can happen. Irrational thinking, comments, and behavior quickly follow and the situation can swiftly spiral out of control. In many situations, compromise is the norm where neither party completely gets their way, but makes measurable progress in the desired direction. Finally, in some situations the participating members must agree to disagree because the conflict has not brought either side any closer to the intended destination.
Conflict should be perceived as a healthy situation that arises in all of our lives. The way in which it is approached, handled, and understood greatly effects the outcome as well. It is very possible to appreciate the benefit of conflicting opinions because it often encourages people to vocalize their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Clear heads and respectful attitudes go a long way in working towards a resolution that may take various forms.
