Sears, Roebuck and Co. was America's largest retailer in 1982
Sears sold firearms for over 100 years. Most were made by other companies (Remington, Savage, Marlin, Mossberg, etc.) for Sears but marked with the Sears trade names of J C Higgins or Ted Williams.
Alvah C. Roebuck was a co-founder of Sears and Roebuck along with Richard W. Sears. He went to work for Richard Sears in 1887, and the two ended up forming the company in 1893. Roebuck took charge of the heavily technological division of the company, that sold optical goods, watches, phonographs, and more.
Sears, Roebuck and Company officially dropped "Roebuck" from its name in 2004, becoming simply known as Sears. While the company had been producing appliances under the Sears brand for many years, the transition to just "Sears" marked a significant rebranding effort. However, the production of appliances under the Sears name continued for some time after the name change.
