I am a strong supporter of Switzerland and the Swiss Watch Industry. First of all Switzerland is one of the countries with the highest standard of living. All of their workers are highly educated and very skilled and take great pride in their work. In China, their watches are mass produced, manufactured by poor, unskilled, underpaid workers who probably don't take much pride in their work. Most Swiss watches, with the exception of a few lower end budget conscious watches are made with the highest quality materials, and do generally carry higher price tags but have more components hand made with very high quality materials. Chinese watches generally are made of cheap low quality materials, and coupled with the poor quality of manufacturing carry a lower price tag. If you want a good watch buy Swiss for a $200-$500 budget can get you some very nice watches including Tissot, ESQ by Movado, Victorinox, Wenger. If you want a cheaper watch that isn't Swiss I would suggest a Japanese watch, which is slightly higher quality than Chinese, brands including Citizen, Seiko, Fossil.
