* It adds convenience to many peoples lives. * Creates a niche for jobs that did not exist without the internet. I think that there are many more reasons too!

In part, the reason is because the Internet is the only real way to perform electronic commerce. While business can be done over the phone, and it has been done that way for many years, that is not a convenient nor easy method, and you cannot see the merchandise. On the Internet, you can see the products, and you can read about nearly everything you need without dealing with anyone nor being pressured. Since everything is available on the screen, there is nothing for a salesperson to forget to say. A customer can totally wait on themselves and enter their payment details. Online transactions allow businesses to be streamlined and efficient, and you only have to help those who actually need to be helped.
