The answer depends on the context of the sentence. A Bear is generally, although not always, a deep set, stocky guy, normally very hairy (chest, face, back etc..) and is what would be considered the epitome of a hard working, working class man. A cub is usually a younger male, who will eventually become a Bear.... They do not always have to be hairy. The term is also used to describe the passive partner in a gay relationship (not all gay relationships - just Bear ones). Bears usually stick with other Bears. They tend to distance themselves from any sort of effeminacy, preferring "a mans man".
