Laundry detergents and fertilizers are the two important sources. The detergents seep into the ground water and eventually enter surface water. Similarly, run off from farms and residential homes can pollute canals, streams and ultimately lakes.

Runoff
Ground water is on or in the ground, it does not reach it.
Smooth - a surface that is even with no roughness or bumps. Rough - a surface that is uneven, with variations in height and texture. Soft - a surface that is gentle to touch and gives a feeling of comfort.
Water is stored above the surface in bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and ponds. Below the surface, water is stored in groundwater aquifers, which are underground layers of rock or sediment that hold water.

Light can be reflected from a smooth surface through specular reflection, where the light rays are reflected at the same angle as they strike the surface. Light can also be reflected from a rough or irregular surface through diffuse reflection, where the light is scattered in various directions upon hitting the surface.
Clear water, drinkable water, safe water, uncontaminated water, potable water, and purified water are all ways to describe safe drinking water.
