It is the 5th largest oil spill in history and the 2nd largest if you don't include the oil spills during the Gulf War in Kuwait. But so far it is still about 1% as bad on wildlife as poaching in the Gulf of Mexico. In short, it's pretty monumental as far as how bad an oil company can be, but mild in terms of overall environmental impact. In the short run it is also having a major impact on local fishing, causing businesses to fold. In contrast Exxon Valdez doesn't even make the top 20.
The total numbers are not yet known. Estimates are impossible to make until the spill stops.
A very timely question. There is a 75 million dollar cap on liability related to damages. The White House has stated that it would like to increase that limit and make it retroactive. There is also a fund set up from an 8 cent per barrel tax to pay for oil spill clean up. See related links.
At least one radio station in Pittsburgh made a song, "Cleaning Up This Mess in the Bay." Done to the tune of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" it had the following Chorous: Cleaning up this mess in the bay, Watching the tide roll away, Cleaning up this mess in the bay, working overtime...." And a verse of: Looks like my buckets almost full, Maybe I should have finished high school, they said fill this bucket of mine, and dump it out again 11 million times. This is how I make my bucks, scraping this sludge off the ducks, working for Exxon sucks, They should move their oil in trucks!
My name is Victor D. Valdez II and I make 30,000 a year.

Covering the spill with dirt or cat litter will make a gasoline spill inert. The liquid is not explosive, but the fumes are, so absorbing the liquid will decrease the volatility.

I can think of many. Here's my list: 1. What organizations are involved in the clean-up? 2. How do skimmers work? 3. How does the BP spill compare with the Exxon Valdez spill 4. How do they estimate the rate of oil coming out of the blown out well? 5. What was the "top kill" attempt and why did it fail? 6. What damage has the oil spill done? 7. How are birds covered with oil cleaned? 8. What are being done with turtles covered with oil? 9. What is a tar ball, and are they dangerous? 10. Who are the people in charge of the clean-up? A good essay should be well organized. You should be able to come up with 3 to 4 ideas you want to make, and organize each one into a paragraph with supporting details. For example, if I want to write an essay on the skimmers, I might want to make a list: 1. Description of a skimmer (part of a boat, or the boat itself) 2. How well can they recover oil? 3. What else besides the skimmer is capturing oil? I've included a Wikipedia link to help you. Good luck.
