Refugees often seek safety in the nearest country that offers protection, but various factors influence their destination, including existing family ties, language barriers, and legal restrictions. While some may flee to neighboring countries immediately, others might travel further afield to places perceived as more welcoming or with better opportunities. Additionally, geopolitical conditions, border policies, and personal circumstances play significant roles in their choices. Thus, while many do go to the nearest safe country, it is not a universal rule.
Rwandan refugees go to their neighboring countries, for example Zaire and Uganda. Burundi is not a safe place for refugees.
Who looks after refugees depends in part on which country the refugees are located in. Often the local government provides at least some services for refugees. Organizations such as the International Red Cross also work to feed and care for refugees.
Australia is regarded as a very safe and wealthy country. Refugees come from places where they are suppressed or persecuted for their religion or political views, or where they suffer extreme hardship and poverty.
They go there by boat.
Leaving their country to go to another

Refugees get away from their country because they are in fear of being persecuted on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion. They go to a different country because they are scared!

A person who asks for permission to live in another country because it is not safe for them to return home is often referred to as a refugee or an asylum seeker. Refugees are individuals who have fled their home country due to persecution, war, or violence, while asylum seekers specifically seek protection in another country and request legal status based on their fear of returning.
Refugees are going through a lot and don't live a normal life like we do. Imagine having war in your country and know it is not safe enough to stay. You want to go to another country for protection but you need to be a citizen. But that takes a long wait and you don't have a place to stay. Some refugees skip the long wait and come on illegal boats or planes. These people are Illegal Immigrants and Refugees at the same time. Those that come in illegal boats or planes stay in a place called a Detention Centre. They wait there a long time and wait to hear what the Government will do with them. Imagine being a person like that.
