I have an answer, kind of. I actually have the same question. I need some good debate material for my 11th grade English class, but am unable to find anything. I also feel sad because you asked your question 10 years ago and it is stale, left unanswered. In my one opinion with brief knowledge of the Enlightenment, the government and church officials probably believed that everything in life could be explained by The Bible and that their ancient practices were perfect. I would assume that they felt fear in that people might retaliate, and they would lose power and control of the people. These new ideas about the world probably scared some of the older officials and church elders because new information and practices can sometime be unsettling or even frightening to older and 'wiser' people. And the same is mostly true nowadays, many older people resent change and are very conservative about everything (not just politically speaking either). That's just how it is sometimes. I hope I was able to shed some light on your question. Don't have a good day, have a great day!

For a strong national government
A political argument is an instance of a logical argument applied to politics. Political arguments are used by academics, media pundits, candidates for political office and government officials. Political arguments are also used by citizens in ordinary interactions to comment about and understand political events. More often than not, political arguments tend to be circular, repeating the same facts as premises under perhaps slightly different guises. Much political argument concerns issues of taxation and government spending
Enlightenment philosophers argued against the divine right of kings by asserting that political authority should be based on reason, natural law, and social contracts, not on the divine mandate of a monarch. They believed that all individuals possessed inherent rights and freedoms that should be protected, leading to the idea of popular sovereignty and government accountability to the people.
