John Smith - the founder of Jamestown when encouraging the settlers to farm and not eat their stocks of food
Captain John Smith of Jamestown It originally comes from the Apostle Paul, in 2 Thessalonians 3: "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat."
Captain Miles Standish is remembered for saying it, although the same ultimatum has probably been uttered many times in the course of history.
It is from The Bible and the quote is "If a man does not work, let him also not eat". It is from 2 Thes 3:10 and was said by Paul.
He was addressing the settlers in Jamestown, some of them who were "gentlemen" and felt themselves above the task of settling a new land.
We find in Geneses that Man was told, "By the sweat of your brow shall you eat bread". In the New Testament, the author (Probably the apostle Paul) says that "If a man will not work, he shall not eat". 2 Thessalonians 3:10
