Coal is kept underground in mines. When it is needed, it is dug up and shipped to power stations where it is burnt to produce electricity.

Oil is similarly kept underground. After it has been pumped to the surface it is stored in tanks, tankers and pipelines for transportation to where it is needed.

Natural gas is kept the same way as oil, in tanks, tankers and pipelines.
