Very bad, I recently visited (2009) the country and traveled 8000 Km round it. At no point in my travels (except the town of Dali) was there anywhere where there was no air pollution.
This said however, it was clear to me that the Chinese people understand the problem and are taking steps to correct it.
Indeed one may say that the Chinese people are the only country in the world to be properly tackling the pollution issue because pollution is man made and china is currently the only country with policies to reduce it population over time.
