Looking for a refrigerant leak, a lot of people will tell you to run it, and spray it with soap and water. This is a very bad idea, and don't listen to those people.
I work on semi trucks, including the AC system. What I'll do is evacuate the refrigerant, pull a vacuum and leak check. If it fails the leak check, I'll use soap and water to find the leak, but first I'll charge the system with about 250 psig positive pressure on both sides with nitrogen.
Most auto parts stores carry a halon 'sniffer'. If you have a 1994 or newer vehicle, you'll actually be looking for HFC leakage - not CFC leakage.
