In 1866 Alfred Bernhard Nobel invented the explosive called dynamite. He was a Swedish chemist and engineer. Nobel made a fortune from this "weapon" and other explosives associated with it. He was a brilliant scientist and when he died in 1896, he had earned 355 patents.

Some people say that he regretted his new explosive and sought ways to help society rather than create bombs to destroy society.

In Nobel's will, he left most of his fortune to be used to help society by awarding people who did their best to help society. The areas of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace were some of his primary interests.

His will was disputed by his family, however by 1901, the Nobel Prize Society was established in Stockholm Sweden to give financial rewards to people who did work to help humanity.

So, in a strange way, the inventor of dynamite sought to better the world with his Nobel Prize fortune.

Although the Nobel Prize contributed to humanity, few would argue that advances in peace and science to help humanity would not have been created if the Nobel Prize did not exist.

Scientists, writers, doctors of medicine and people such as these would still have helped humanity whether there was a Nobel Prize or not.
